INTRODUCTION
Alco Products, Inc., served two major locomotive markets, domestic and export. To develop an understanding of the marketplace at the time of the introduction of the Century series, one needs to look at the status of both of these fields.
In the early 1960s, export sales accounted for more than half of Alco's locomotive sales. This includes units that were built in Schenectady, N.Y., plant as well as units that were built under license abroad. Although the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corp. had recently gained market share, Alco Products had regained its lead as the prime U.S. exporter of mainline locomotives. To quote from the company's 1963 annual report:
Alco's position as the leading U.S. exporter of mainline locomotives was
strengthened in 1963 by the manufacture and delivery of unusually large orders obtained late in 1962. As expected, the
overall level of overseas orders placed was slightly lower in 1963.
We look forward with confidence to a continuation of our leadership abroad in 1964 and future years as motive power requirements increase to keep pace with economic development. Alco's export volume in the future will not derive exclusively from the sale of complete locomotives built in the United States and shipped overseas. It will be based in part on business generated by licensing arrangements under which the company grants rights to manufacture Alco-design equipment abroad, with Alco directly supplying numerous key components, replacement parts and technical assistance."
Also during 1963, the U.S. government recognized Alco's success in the export mar-
ket. To quote from the 1963 annual report once again: "The President's 'E' Award was presented to Alco in 1963 in recognition of the
Company's record 'in support of the national program of export expansion.'" Alco, the only company to have received the award for locomotive export activity, was cited for achieving substantial and sustained increases in export sales. The citation read: "By developing, manufacturing and exporting diesel-electric locomotives to 15 free-world nations, Alco Products, Inc. is making a notable contribution to the industrialization and economic growth of five continents."
