From being, ten years ago, a technology gimmick of somewhat dubious character, variable geometry has become today an accepted norm for aircraft of certain specific types, with clearly definable advantages and known penalties. Roy M Braybrook, BSc, CEng, AFRAeS, introduces this special issue devoted to variable geometry aircraft with a survey of the seven current aircraft (four Western, three Soviet) that use the swing-wing feature.

prototype completed of the Grumman XF10E-1 Jaguar made only 32 flights and each of those flights was an adventure, as shown in this account by C H "Corky" Meyer, who was then chief engineering test pilot of Grumman and is now president of Grumman American Aircraft.
