DEFENCE Hindustan Aeronautics, or HAL as India's national aircraft industry is more usually known, enters its 35th year with a key role to play in providing the equipment upon which the Indian Air Force largely depends. In a two-part survey starting in this issue, our Indian correspondent Pushpindar Chopra describes the growth of HAL, and we present the first-ever detailed cutaway drawing of the MiG-21, which is among the types now being built by HAL.

It's a far cry from the observation balloons used by French Army officers in the eighteenth century to the Boeing E-3A airborne early warning and control aircraft, but both have the same fundamental purpose. The Boeing AWACS is described, and illustrated by a cutaway drawing.

On New Year's Day, 1945 - just 30 years ago - the Luftwaffe, the once-vaunted invincible air arm of Germany's Third Reich - embarked on its final gamble: an all-out offensive against Allied airfields in the Low Countries and NE France. John Weal describes the ill-starred operation and illustrates some of the aircraft involved.
