DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
In 1943, General Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, the commanding general of U.S. Army Air Forces, wanted to demonstrate that Allied forces could use "ships in the air" (just like the Navy used ships on the sea) to stage an aerial invasion of Burma. Arnold gave two innovative lieutenant colonels, Philip G. Cochran and John R. Alison, both aggressive and successful fighter pilots, virtual carte blanche to obtain anything they needed to organize a top secret force, including men and equipment. "To hell with the paperwork," Arnold said. "Go out and fight."
Air Commandos against Japan tells the story of how within a few short months these daring aviators trained and equipped an entirely new kind of organization, moved it to India, established bases, and then led it into combat in support of an eccentric and combative British officer named Orde C. Wingate. Months earlier, Wingate had developed the concept of Long-Range Penetration Groups (LRPGs) to disrupt the enemy's communications and rear area installations and to drive home the strategic air offensive. Such groups, he suggested, offered a "greater opportunity of mystifying and misleading the enemy than any other form of warfare; and should be used as an essential part of a plan of conquest to create a situation leading to the advance of the Allied's main forces." But Wingate needed the Americans to create what would become the USAAF Air Commandos, a unit that marked a milestone in tactical operations.
The Air Commandos comprised light planes to evacuate wounded, transports to move heavy cargo, a fighter force to attack the enemy when they threatened Wingate's LRPG columns, gliders to transport troops and cargo, helicopters, and personnelabout 87 officers and 436 enlisted. In Japanese-occupied Burma, where terrain made a textbook frontal assault on the Japanese impossible, the Air Commandos took an unorthodox approach to the fight, using unconventional hit-and-run tactics to confuse the enemy and to destroy their lines of communication and supply. This book describes how the unit successfully attacked the enemy from the air, resupplied British commandos on the ground, and airlifted the wounded out of the battle areaeventually driving the Japanese out of Burma.
