The Age of Sails tells the story of naval warfare as it was fought in ships driven by the wind, from the early thirteenth century until the mid-nineteenth. It opens with the struggles of the mediaeval French and English kings for control of "the narrow seas" between their lands and tontinues with accounts of the sea histories of Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Russia, the United States, and other nations. Types of ships and weapons, changing naval techniques, and some background history are briefly presented to add meaning and understanding, but the emphasis throughout is on the story of war upon the waters and the men who directed and manned the embattled fleets. It is written primarily for the non-professional reader with an interest in ships, in history, and in the sea.
Volume I of the series, The Ancient Fleets, tells the story of naval warfare as it was fought in oar-driven galleys in ancient and mediaeval times. Volume III, The Age of Steam, carries on to the present day, from the invention of the steamboat to the use of nuclear-powered warships off Vietnam. This book, The Age of Sails, bridges the gap between them, presenting the deeds of such naval immortals as Drake, Grenville, Tromp, Blake, de Ruyter, Tourville, John Paul Jones, de Grasse, Suffren, Nelson, Hull, Decatur, Wessel, and many others. Scarcely less important than the men are the ships they sailed - Revenge, Victory, Constitution - which in time gained distinctive characters of their own. Men and ships! That is the essence of naval history.
