Several years ago, when I attempted to scratch-build the Pennsy C1 switcher, I could find only one line drawing to work from - and that one was of questionable scale. Just as I was about to abandon the project, a friend lent me his copy of Abe's ABC Charts of the Pennsylvania Locomotives. Not only did I find the most detailed and comprehensive drawings ever compiled, but I was suddenly face to face with a remarkable railroader.
As he states in the preface of his little book, Frederick "Abe" Goodrich, after encountering confusion in engine nomenclature, set out to "standardize the names of parts of the locomotive to all men all over the system." The original booklet was 4 x 81/2" to fit the inside pocket of an engineman or shopman. The 211/2" drawings, meticulously rendered, were folded seven times to fit within the narrow format.
Reproduction of Abe's manual in its present form is an attempt to share the fascination, joy, appreciation and sense of history he gave to me. I don't know how many originals were printed in 1941, but those copies still in existence are surely guarded most securely.
May your hours with Abe's drawings and parts lists be as long and enjoyable as mine have been - and are.

This book is dedicated to the men on both sides of the cab of the locomotive. It is one that will be appreciated by many enginemen. I feel, or rather know that if used by the enginemen when making out their M.P.62, it will be welcomed by the round house foreman and his force.
The purpose of this work is to locate and correctly name the many parts of the locomotive for both enginemen and shopmen alike, so that when one speaks or writes of a certain part the other will instantly understand just exactly what part is involved. This will reduce time and study of trying to find a simple part with an outlandish name on an M.P.62.
The idea is to standardize the names of the parts of the locomotive to all men all over the system. This has never been done before. Here is an example:--I froze the supply pipe to the injector. I reported on the M.P.62:- "Supply pipe to injector right side froze". I was called in the office and advised by the foreman that I had frozen the "Fisher-Boy-Pipe". I was stuck, I had never heard of any such apparatus about a locomotive in my 36 years of firing or running them. That is just one instance of the difference in names for parts. With all due respect for that foreman, the proper name of the part I froze was and is "Supply Pipe" and it should be so called by everyone interested.
The names that I have entered in this book have been approved by the chief of motive power as satisfactory for general use among the men operating and repairing locomotives.
The drawing of the locomotives herein have also been approved and permission granted to supply all those who desire them as an educational feature.
It has cost me plenty of time and money to produce this book and the drawings are all of my own hand work. I hope you will recognize the tremendous task involved and realize that the price that I am asking is reasonable, for the value that you are receiving.
