Introduction
During her operation for more than 66 years, from 1876 to 1942, the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad became affectionately known as the "Never Come, Never Go." And for good reason. She was a long time in getting here, a long time here, and a long time coming back.
But during her many years of service, the Narrow Gauge was always more than just a railroadmore than just a means of transportation. She was a main artery that wound into the heart of Nevada County. She was a personalityan integral and vital personality who grew and matured with the local communities and helped Nevada County grow from a raucous and rambunctious youth to a historical and eccentric adult. This is her story.
She was talked about, planned for, and longed for long before she arrived.
Although Nevada City and Grass Valley rapidly developed into two of the largest cities in California in the 1850s, their growth was based on the fact that this was where the gold was. Unlike San Francisco and Sacramento, which developed mainly because they were smack dab in the middle of major water routes that led to and from the gold fields, Nevada City and Grass 'Valley grew up despite the fact that they were smack dab in the middle of nowhereexcept the chief gold mining district in California and perhaps the world. As they said at the time, the Twin Cities were essentially disconnected from the "outside world."
