In my previous book, "8 Realistic Track Plans For Small Switching Layouts", we explored the modeling opportunities available to those with even the most limited of space. In that book, I picked a typical spare room as an example but made a point of keeping the layout bench work out of the middle of the room and along the walls only. In this follow up edition, I assume the same room dimensions but take a look at the options available when the center of the room is available for use. Doing so allows for longer runs and, in some cases, continuous run possibilities.

As you review the plans that follow, focus more on the various track arrangements and bench work footprints as opposed to any particular theme or era. Some plans have a turn back loop on the peninsula, others use a stub peninsula. Some plans bump a few inches into the closet others do not. The point is, you can use the various track and bench work footprints as a guide and apply it to your own personal theme.

By trade I'm a custom layout builder and have made every effort to use that experience to come up with plans that are straightforward to build. After all, it does the modeler no good to come up with something that looks good on paper if it is not practical to construct in real life.

Many of the plans in this book are based on specific prototypes. In the cases of the freelance themes, an attempt was made to make the plans plausible, that is, believable in terms of something that could have existed. With the prototype plans, I did take some 'artistic liberties' as far as inserting some industries to improve the overall look or add operational interest.
