The Pennsylvania Railroad. . .the self-appointed "Standard Railroad of The World". .so colossal in ego that they would dare to so name themselves and so colossal in achievement that they could get away with such narcissism simply because it happened to be true.
And make no mistake. . .they were the Standard Railroad. Now it can be told that even in the highest councils of archrival B &O, "what is Broad Street going to do" was a question inevitably raised when large issues were at stake. The Penn could not be ignored.
The legions of people who worked for the Penn-what of them? And the countless thousands of Penn railfans - why are they so attracted to such a gigantic, seemingly soulless railroad which one of its own loyal employees and avid fans described as "a transportation machine and people mover run by an army marching in lockstep"?
We suspect that the mystique of the Penn is rooted in the plain fact that it seemed miraculous such a giant could function at all, let alone well. And that it ran so well decade after decade is a tribute to its officers and employees. . .all up from the ranks until that last, unfortunate choice. Witness:
