On October 26, 1959, when the Chicago and North Western began to modernize their commuter operations, a new era began in Chicagoland suburban service-the era of push-pull trains, bilevel gallery cars, and Highliners. This new look came fast to some railroads, slow to others, and to a few-not at all. The changes made by some Chicago suburban railroads during the period covered by this book-1960 to 1975-were significant, to a few there was only a change in name through merger, and a couple ceased service altogether. One railroad, the South Shore, didn't really change at all. "The 5:10 to Suburbia" looks at fifteen years of Chicago commuter service and records the evolution in power, equipment and operations through photographs. Come ride with us on the 5:10.
