The image of the curious but beautiful 4-10-2 steam locomotives is forever held between the covers of this 35-year effort. The complete nature of Three Barrels of Steam proves that continuity does exist for the edification of the serious steam buff.
All 60 three-cylinder 4-10-2 locomotives are fully treated. The help of several expert collectors was needed to complete this pictorial documentary and it is through their generosity that the book is so photographically comprehensive. Three Barrels of Steam is a pictorial collectors' item that includes photos of all 4-10-2's built for use in the United States.
The best available negatives of each locomotive were reserved for reproduction. For example, Guy L. Dunscomb's famous collection was unselfishly offered. Alan Youell combed his files and supplied superb pictures taken by himself and others in the southern California area. Excellent photographs were also offered by Gerald M. Best from his storehouse of railroadiana.
Three Barrels of Steam is an exciting, informative history of these monsters of the rails. You will read about train wrecks, robberies, explosions, floods and other disasters!
