20th Century by Lucius Beebe
In the peerage of great names of luxury travel, the name of The Twentieth Century Limited ranks with the sumptuous implications of Shepherd's Hotel in Cairo, Claridge's in London, the Blue Train and the Simplon-Orient Express, the first Mauretania and the Queen Mary. It was an institution which for the five glory decades of its supremacy was at once a prestige symbol of glittering magnitude, a household word throughout the civilized world and a triumph of railroading operations with few equals and no superiors.
Its sailing lists were the great and powerful of the time and place, the names that made news and were the stuff of Who's Who, Burke's Peerage and The Wall Street Journal.
Its regular patrons were the faces one encountered in other settings in the Place Vendome, the Via Mizner in Palm Beach, luncheon at the Ritz in Madison Avenue and in the corridors of The Palace in San Francisco. They were the people who traveled with their own staffs of servants, luggage by Louis Vuiton, jeweled traveling clocks from Cartier, and, often enough their own bed linen and special blends of whisky. They arrived and departed over the red carpet that was rolled down for The Century at Grand Central Depot.
Its owners' claim to its being "The Greatest Train in The World" was no more challenged than the claim of Rolls Royce: "The World's Finest Car." In the fifty years of its superb operations as an extra fare deluxe limited between New York and Chicago, The Century sometimes departed in eight sections from a single one of its terminals. In a single year it grossed $9,968,000 for its owners and for more than half a century it cost an extra fare to ride its all-Pullman consists, for it carried no coaches.
This is the story in the years of its golden noontide of the train that was the tangible expression of American passion for speed, precision, luxury and only the very best of everything and of the people who rode it to glamorous destinies. It is a trained newspaper reporter's profile of a national institution of such resounding dimensions that it was said of it editorially by The New York Evening World that it was "a name so magnificent that it should never be printed save in capital letters, thus:
THE TWENTIETH CENTURY LIMITED."
