ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This centennial publication is dedicated to all those men and women who have operated, maintained and preserved Shay No. 5 at Cass, W.V. since 1905. Many men have operated No. 5, but Artie Barkley has probably spent more time with No. 5 than anyone else. Artie joined the Cass Scenic Railroad in 1965!
Born and raised in Cass, Artie became aware of No. 5 at the age of twelve when he was befriended by Clyde Galford, engineer for The Mower Lumber Company. Although children were prohibited from Company property, Artie occasionally saw the Mower Shays at work near the Cass Company Store when he rode to the Company Farm with his father.
Arties stories about No. 5 inspired this book and are responsible for its completion.
While Artie's family may sometimes feel slighted, because of his involvement with No. 5; tourists, historians and railfans across the nation and around the world are thankful that he has tirelessly worked to maintain, rebuild and operate this piece of living history. We thank them for sharing Artigas time with Shay No. 5, the Cass Scenic Railroad, and us.
Thanks also to George Deike, the author of the article on the history of Shay No. 5. George is a transplanted resident of Cass. His thorough research and tireless efforts to preserve the logging industry history at Cass, and in West Virginia, are unmatched.
Many people have asked about the "Why" and the "How" of Shay locomotives. Max Robin has concisely addressed both of these here.
Since the late 1940's many photographers have visited Cass and recorded the activities on the railroad. Without the interest and foresight of William Moneypenny, Russ Munroe, Emmons Lancaster, Ivan Clarkson, Harold Allen, lain MacKenzie-Gray, Wally Johnson and John Krause those views of the Mower Lumber Company operations would have been lost.
More recent scenic railroad "Railfan" photographers, and members of the Mountain State Logging and Railroad Historical Association, including Sonny Burruss (whose wife refers to him as Elmer), Richard Sparks, Max Robin, George Fizer, Jim Boyd, the late Phil Bagdon, Mike Allen, Richard Carter and Glyn Thomas have exposed thousands of frames of film at the Cass Scenic Railroad. Their extraordinary efforts and stacks of excellent photos made selection of those to be included here a real challenge, but a pleasure just the same. Thank you for sharing those with us.
A special thanks to my daughter Katie, who deciphered my handwritten scrawl and provided all the desktop publishing effort; and to my wife Barbara for her extraordinary patience.
Finally, a special thanks to the previous and current members of the West Virginia State Legislature, Department of National Resources and the State Park Service Management personnel who have preserved the resource known as the Cass Scenic Railroad so that all of us can enjoy it.
