The 4300s proved to be extremely capable and dependable locomotives, and while steam reigned supreme they were the workhorse for the system's fast passenger and freight service.
The 4300 4-8-2's is the complete story of these locomotives. They were distinctive because all except two classes were built by the railroad at its own Sacramento General Shops. This book covers in detail the design, construction, maintenance, service assignments, and operations of all five classes of these locomotives over the entire system. Photo coverage includes rare erecting shop scenes and builders' photos, and also action views taken on each route to depict these engines in service.
This revised edition contains much new material, including 40 photos (9 in color), an expanded tender chapter, many additions and enhancements throughout the text, and reference and index sections.
The book is oriented to both the steam historian and the modeler.
