The eyes arrest and startle you with their intensity. This magnificent gray wolfs sidelong glance seems to say: -Stop for a moment while I decide if you are friend or enemy.- At the same time, the bend of his head and the set of his mouth are gentle and conciliatory. This beautiful creature's dignified and intelligent expression may help you to understand why the gray wolf was so respected and revered by Native Americans.
According to Ojibwa mythology, Nanabush, son of mortal woman and the West Wind, learned how to hunt from the wolf. He and Tooth, the grandson of the old she-wolf pack leader, were warned by her to take only the meat they could use. But in the intoxication of the hunt, they ignored her warning and were themselves hunted by the spirit Manitou. Tooth was caught and killed, but the half-god Nanabush managed to bring him hack to life.
After Tooth had described the pathway to heaven, Nanabush sent him back to guide our souls as we make our final journey. And so, the ancient legend tells us that the wolf is our brother, our teacher, our partner and our guide to heaven.
