Two Wolves urges his weary mare towards a stand of lofty pines. He will make camp there, warmed against the bitter winter's night by a fire and a hot dinner. He has made this solitary sojourn into the mountains a hundred times, as his ancestors had before him. He seeks the elk who have retreated into the sheltered valleys of this mountain fortress of stone and ice. Each year as the snows fall, the elk begin their journey so that they may survive the winter ... and each year Two Wolves follows, so that his people may also survive.
And so the seasons turn in a dance that has never faltered since the dawn of time. The children of Mother Earth submit to that all-prevailing force, and exist in harmony under its eternal reign. The ways of the Indian teach that we are as subject to the ageless cycles as the trees, elk, and the snow-swept mountains themselves.
The awesome scope of these primordial cycles of life is present ed in these epic visions by Navajo artist Mark Silversmith. With
uncanny detail and dimension, he celebrates the ancient rhythms that eternally conquer Man's pride and humbles us to its irresistible force.
